Clyde A. Wilson journals: Berkeley, California, 1935-1936
Troop forty recorder

Creator/Contributor:

Wilson, Clyde A., 1919-2004, creator, author.

Abstract:

Contains two journals kept by a Berkeley, California teenager mostly documenting his activities and trips taken as a member of Troop 40 of the Boy Scouts of America. The first journal covers a cross-country trip by train to Philadelphia, New York City, Niagara Falls, Canada, Glacier National Park and home from August 14-September 1, 1935. The trip took place at the same time as the first American Boy Scout Jamboree was being held in Washington, D.C. but a polio scare resulted in the event being cancelled on short notice, possibly resulting in a change of plans by the Berkeley troop. They rendezvoused with other scout troops in Philadelphia who went on to Washington before the Berkeley troop moved on to New York. Dated entries describe his sights and experiences along the way and scouting activities. The second journal (July, 1936) covers his activities as the scoutmaster at Camp Wolfboro (now Camp Wolfeboro) located near Arnold, California and attendance at a regional Jamboree in Sacramento, California. Dated entries contain details of the various activities the troop has engaged in each day and includes some mounted items such as a printed camp brochure, a "kp" duties assignment list, and several photographic postcards of troop members and scenic shots of the camp. Laid in materials from the journals have been foldered separately and include a "Jamboree equipment list", a typescript of a skit titled, "The Estabrook Nieces," and two mimeograph copies of a semi-monthly newsletter for Troop 40, Berkeley, California titled, Troop Forty Recorder (Volume XI, No. 1, September 4, 1936).
